Not a DIY Project: Professional Hydro-Jetting
Not every little plumbing problem requires the services of a professional. Toilet backing up? Probably something you can handle yourself with a plunger. Hair buildup in the shower drain? An unpleasant 30 minutes and a store-bought snake can fix that problem.
However, when it comes to the sewer lines beneath the house, no amount of DIY gumption is going to properly diagnose and repair the issue. Problems with sewer lines can spiral out of control quickly, turning into a nightmare for home and businessowners alike.
When it comes to solutions like hydro-jetting, its best to leave the dirty work to the professionals.
What is hydro-jetting?
Hydro-jetting is exactly what it sounds like: It uses a high-pressure stream of water to blast away unwanted clogs inside the sewer lines themselves. It is a fluid alternative to using a snake or rooter to achieve the same effect.
How does it work?
The cleanout of the pipes is opened up, and the specialty hose and nozzle are lowered into the cleanout. Then, water is pushed through the hose at extremely high PSI — often higher than 4,000 PSI, as a matter of fact. The water then chips away at grease, scaling, hair, debris and any other foreign substances in the pipe. Hydro-jetting can even smash up roots that have penetrate the pipes.
The debris then carries away down the pipes like normal, leaving behind clean, flushed pipes.
How to tell when it is time for professional hydro-jetting
Clogs in the main lines can manifest as random backups and clogs in multiple places in the house. A clogged sink, for instance, is just going to back up in that one area. But if one day the toilet is clogged, then the sink and then there is a backup in the garage, it may be time to investigate clogs in the big sewer pipes.
If you have tried snaking with an augur and the problem is not solved, consider hydro-jetting. The advantage of hydro-jetting is that while a snake can dislodge and remove a large chunk of the clog, it does not really clean the pipes. It solves the immediate problem, but pipe buildup and grease will still remain, making the pipe effectively smaller and more likely to clog again.
When is hydro-jetting not the answer?
While hydro-jetting works spectacularly at cleaning out pipes, it is not always the appropriate solution. If there is a leak in the pipe, all the water being shoved through is not going to help and could end up coming out in the wrong place in your home.
If the pipes are weak — usually from heavy corrosion — the high-pressure water could end up breaking the pipes or making an already-broken pipe worse. These are rare occasions, of course, so only worry about them if you know for a fact that there is a leak or that the pipes are very old.
Call professional services instead
If snaking and rooting have let you down and the clogs keep coming back, it may be time to call a hydro-jetting professional who can give your pipes a true deep clean.
