Each year is filled with holidays and other events that are a cause for celebration and with that comes plenty of guests, tons of food and, something else you should consider: hydro-jetting. If any one of these parties ends up hosted at your home, you'll want to make sure your pipes and garbage disposal are…
Make a To-Do List and Check It Twice: Garbage Disposal Repair
The garbage disposal is one of the home’s hardest working and under-appreciated appliances. Often, it is overused and abused by being tasked with large, hard-to-break down items and lack of proper regular care. The garbage disposal is most noticeable when it stops working because it can slow down the entire flow of the kitchen, the heart of the home. This is a dangerous prospect as we head toward the holiday season, since festive gatherings cannot go as planned if an array garbage disposal puts the kitchen out of commission.
Garbage disposal care
Though it may seem like a blender in the sink, a garbage disposal can definitely not handle chunks of anything larger than an ice cube. In fact, it is recommended to occasionally throw a few ice cubes down the garbage disposal to help care for and sharpen the blades. Anything thick that coagulates or clumps together like rice, thick sauces or grease can also damage your garbage disposal. Instead of trying to rid these items through the garbage disposal entirely, try throwing out most of it before you wash the dishes; that way, the garbage disposal is likely to handle the little bit left.
Signs of distress
The biggest sign that your garbage disposal may be in trouble is when it will not turn on. Usually, before it comes to that, it will make a whirring sound because it is on but not able to do anything. This likely means it is jammed or clogged. You can check for yourself, but it may be dangerous because you are reaching into a dark place with blades. Use a flashlight, and be sure the disposal is turned off. The most unfortunate sign of garbage disposal distress is “spitting up.” If this occurs, call a plumber right away. Clogs are the most likely culprit, but the hardware could also be jammed, in which case, it is best to call a professional.
Getting a repair
Getting your garbage disposal repaired by a professional is easy and can save you a lot of headache, especially at this time of year. If you do not maintain your garbage disposal or are seeing some of the above signs of distress, call a local plumber who can take a look and repair it before it becomes a huge problem. Many plumbers are available same day or within one day. They will make an appointment with you and likely only take a few minutes to diagnose the problem. If it is a simple repair, it is usually done within an hour in one visit. If there are more complicated plumbing issues, you may need a follow-up or to wait for your plumber to order a part.
Prepared and ready
Having your garbage disposal repaired will help you be a prepared, confident host while extra guests are in town and there is extra hubbub in the kitchen. Get this important holiday must-have task checked off your list for smooth sailing this season.
